Jazzing out at the Five Points Jazz Fest! Coming next week – Saturday, May 18th

The annual Five Points Jazz Festival returns 11 a.m. Saturday, May 18 and festival-goers can celebrate the culture and roots of this historic Denver neighborhood with entertainment, music, yoga, films and more until 1 a.m.

The free and family-friendly festival features 50 bands playing live music on 11 stages throughout the day kicking off with a parade down Welton Street at 11 a.m.

Download the Five Points Jazz Festival app to create custom schedules and performance reminders, learn more about the vendors, and view maps, performer bios, food and drink menus, and more! Available for download now for iOS and Android devices.

The app will replace the multi-fold printed maps and schedules used in previous years and eliminate paper waste. Plus, Five Points Jazz Festival food vendors will be serving up their tasty fare using only compostable or recyclable plates, cups and utensils.

The festival showcases everything from smooth jazz to bop to swing to funk, but that’s not all! At noon, 1 and 2 p.m. at the Lydian, children ages 18 months to 5 years and their caregivers can join in on play-centered musical activities, story-telling and games with KinderBop.

Darren Kramer, musician, composer and educator, is offering three free Sonic Tonic lectures, where participants will learn to listen for the nuances in jazz music and gain a greater appreciation for the genre. Learn to Listen like a Big Band Musician will be presented at Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library on May 7, 10:30 a.m.-noon (all ages), Learn to Listen like a Jazz Musician will be presented at the Craft Coworking Space in the Lydian May 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m. (21+), and Learn to Listen Like a Jazz Musician (the basics) will be presented at the Jazz Festival May 18, 11-11:45 a.m. at Blair-Caldwell (all ages). These discussions are free and open to the public, but an RSVP is requested.

For those willing to stretch their muscles as well as their musical horizons, on May 18 at their Five Points Studio, The River Yoga presents two Vinyasa yoga sessions accompanied by live music by Harold Rapp III: Power Vinyasa – Warm from 9:30-10:30 a.m. (84 degrees) at and Power Vinyasa – Hot from 11 a.m.- noon (94 degrees). Space is limited, so please register ahead of time. $20 – single class fee.

In addition to the music and entertainment at the Five Points Jazz Festival, we will be screening two films. Join us at Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library May 18 for a screening of “Rhapsody in Black,” a film recounting the story of ten black artists who changed the face of American Music at 12:30 p.m., and a screening of “Sarah Vaughan: The Divine One,” a film about the singer’s stellar career, at 2:30 p.m.
