Denver’s popular DJ – the late Steve Cooper

Steve’s last words on Fb, 7/16/18: In addition to starting mornings on “K-Triple R” in Cheyenne, I just rolled into my second week back on 103-5 The Fox in Denver thanks to Big Rob Lewis, Garner Goin, and Gregg Stone. I am blessed to have you guys in my life.

And then Steve moved on…

Martin Epp: I’m so sad to hear of Steve Cooper’s passing. When I first moved to Denver in the early ’80’s he would crack me up listening to him on the radio. What a true talent! When I was in Lionize he would do the Hot Legs Contest at Iliff Park Saloon where he would frequently get up and jam with us on guitar. I always enjoyed going to KBPI to record ads with him for Bangles and other clubs we were playing. He was larger than life – it was always an adventure to be around him. He was hands down the best and funniest DJ I ever had the pleasure of following and a helluva nice guy to boot. Total respect to a friend gone too soon.

Rodney DiAngelo: Coop’s gone??? He was the most awesome dj in Denver. Bobby (Diamond), and I would pop on to the station whenever we wanted and he would buzz us in. He even let us do weather once! Always had us at the Rainbow Music Hall (once we brought a live pig) where they did live broadcasts on some Fridays. Awesome guy. Even though we would argue over greatest American band (he would say Bruce Springsteen… And I would say KISS). RIP Coop! You will always be da man!!!

Ann Beard-Simmons: Denver lost a legend yesterday. Steve Cooper from KBPI in Denver passed. I talked to Steve last right after Ricky’s [Kasmir, a/k/a Gary X] Memorial. We reminisced about some great times with Electric Playground and Winger. God Speed, Coop – its truly a rock n roll heaven.

Favorite DJ Steve Cooper Passes Away Unexpectedly

Steve Warren passed away yesterday. For generations of radio listeners on the Front Range and around the country, he was known on the air as Steve Cooper.

Coop was a legendary broadcaster with a powerful voice and an incredible gift for storytelling. Off the air, Steve Warren was humble, kind, thoughtful, and intelligent.

One of the many lives he touched was mine. By the time I met Coop, he was already an icon. Raised in Waterloo, Iowa, his career took off in Tucson and later took him to Colorado Springs, Denver, Detroit, Green Bay, Fort Collins, Madison, Seattle, and Wyoming. Over the years, he worked for some of the best radio stations in the country.

As a teenager in Denver, I would listen to “You Can’t Win This” every night on KBPI. Thanks to Coop, I can still remember what musical key a bee buzzes in. In 1992, Ozzy Osbourne came to McNichols Arena on the first of several farewell tours. Coop was broadcasting live from the parking lot and I won a keychain for answering a trivia question about David Lee Roth’s junk. That night, I decided I wanted to be on the radio.

22 years later, I had the opportunity to work with Coop here at Townsquare Media. Watching him meticulously structure every break felt like taking a graduate-level broadcasting class. He was an expert wordsmith with flawless delivery; truly a master of his craft.

Behind the scenes, he was down to earth, exuding the confidence that comes from decades of experience, without the ego. And his stories were epic. If there was a rock star in the ’80s and ’90s, Coop interviewed them. Some of them still owe him money.

I’ve been blessed to work with many talented broadcasters over the years. None were better than Steve Cooper. As long as there is still rock and roll on the radio, his legend will live on.

Terri Landreth Warren (Steve’s wife): I know we’ve been sharing so many tributes to the love of my life and radio icon Steve Cooper, but this one TRULY melted my heart! Uncle Nasty aka Gregg Stone paid tribute to Steve Cooper on the station he JUST went back to work for, 103-5 The Fox in Denver, and Roger King along with Program Director Garner Goin put together this AMAZING video to go along with this precious tribute! I wanted to share this, because Steve Cooper is so honored as the man he was, and SOOOO MUCH MORE! GOD BLESS you all for this AMAZING tribute!
