Yesterday (5/28/18), MTV’s official Facebook page posted the following message: “We’re putting music videos back on MTV.”

What does this mean? I have not seen an official press release to this effect and this breaking news has not entered the news cycle yet.

But if MTV were to go back to its roots and ditch the current reality-TV business model, it could be a refreshing change of pace for a network that has seen its market share decline in recent years.

How could it succeed? Seems to me that a top-40 format is the best way to go. If MTV were to focus on appealing to the 18-24 crowd and feature music by Imagine Dragons, Cardio B, Nicki Minaj, Bruno Mars, etc., then they could possibly make a go of it this time around.

The biggest hurdle is that business abhors a vacuum, and if a 24-hour music-video channel had any real potential for financial viability, someone else would have made it work by now. In truth, it may be a dead-end road.

Is MTV getting back into the music video business? Can’t say just yet. Personally, I would look forward to it. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

[Editor’s note: The only reason I ever had cable was for MTV and VH1. When they dropped their music videos, there was no reason to watch those channels and I could get the normal channels with a rabbit ears antenna. Cable wasn’t worth the $80+ per month.]
