Dear Elektra Records,

I appreciate you taking the time out to write me a letter, and send me the CD of your newly-signed act. I enjoyed reading your “remember-when” missive, and your talk about re-establishing a relationship between label and radio. And in fact, you were correct – I did fall in love with the song on first listen. (Or, at least, I fell in heavy like.)

That said, it certainly hasn’t been that long since you’ve done this. Surely you know that we terrestrial radio stations are still bound by FCC regulations. There’s no way you’re not cognizant of the fact that FCC violations can cost the station up to $50,000… with half of that coming from the DJ’s pocket.

Given this, why did you send me this catchy song with the word “fuck” sung in it…eight times? Did you hope I’d love the song so completely I’d risk the $25,000 to share it with my listeners? Did you expect me to do the radio edit on it? As long as we’re playing remember-when, do you remember back in the day, when labels would send “radio-friendly” edits to stations? You don’t even have to do that anymore – you just have to make them available online for us to download. Was that too much trouble? Is this new relationship with you going to involve me taking over that part?

Because if so, I think I might want to see other labels.

Respectfully,
alf
