Tom Carleno’s “Perfect Imperfection” Winner of ‘Best Instrumental Album – Acoustic’
in the 2013 Zone Music Reporter Music Awards!

Tom Carleno’s highly anticipated debut solo CD, Perfect Imperfection, is the culmination of a journey through anxiety, mourning, self-discovery and enlightenment.

Blending rock, jazz, folk and pop, the Denver based guitarist creates distinctive compositions using a wide variety of alternate tunings. Using these tunings as a canvas for his songs, he creates musical images for solo guitar that are rejuvenating, inspiring, and introspective.

SWALLOW HILL’S UKEFEST SET FOR JUNE 5th THRU 7th

Swallow Hill Music is gearing up for its 7th Denver Ukefest, held on June 5-7, 2014. Denver Ukefest is a three-day festival, showcasing all-things ukulele, including workshops for all skill levels (and even loaner ukes if you don’t own one). This year’s workshops include Ukulele 101 for the absolute beginner, Fingerstyle Blues for the more advanced uke player, a Hawaiian Dance workshop for all, and more.

What: Swallow Hill Music presents 2014 Denver Ukefest
When: Thursday thru Saturday, June 5th – 7th , 2014
Where:  Swallow Hill Music, 71 E. Yale Ave, Denver, 80210 and The Brew on Broadway, 3445 S. Broadway, Englewood, 80110
Info: www.denverukefest.org; 303.777.1003 x2

Most of this year’s workshops are led by the performers, ukulele experts and artisans. “It’s great to be able to interact with the performers that you’ll see on stage. In many cases, they’ll present something in the workshop, and then you’ll get to see them perform it on stage that night,” says Chris McGarry, Children’s Program Director and ukulele teacher at Swallow Hill Music. “The workshops also have a wide array of skill levels – with lots of challenging materials that one has to ‘grow into.’ Often times, I’m still working on mastering workshop material until the next year’s Ukefest.”

This year’s festival will return home to Swallow Hill Music’s Yale Avenue location, to join the organization’s 35th Anniversary celebrations. Featuring master classes and concerts by Aldrine Guerrero, Ooks of Hazzard, Star Belle, The Copoetics, and more, Denver Ukefest is perhaps the happiest festival in Denver. INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR LOCAL PUBLIC MEDIA STATION KUBO

This cool little public media station has an international audience

Denver’s own KUVO 89.3FM public radio station was named one of the best Internet jazz radio stations worldwide, by Pete Naughton a writer for The Telegraph, one of the United Kingdom’s’ top media outlets. Naughton, who writes for their podcasts and internet radio columns, listed KUVO as one of the top three best “Jazz & Soul Internet Radio Stations” he’s discovered across the world. Below, what he reported in his column, “Best Internet Radio Stations” online on May 26, 2014.

KUVO

“I stumbled upon this award-winning music station by accident recently – and have been kicking myself for not finding it sooner. Based in Denver, Colorado, its artfully-curated playlists mostly focus on jazz – broadcasting everything from Ella Fitzgerald through to Madeleine Peyroux. A class act.”

“We knew KUVO was a gem when we merged our public media organizations last year,” said Doug Price, President & CEO of Rocky Mountain PBS. “We’re proud of the work they do and the valuable service they provide to our Colorado community.  We are excited for the future and the international doors that have been opened with the online radio stations and mobile app.”

KUVO serves a culturally rich, diverse audience that loves jazz  – all styles of jazz. Our station’s line-up on air and in the studio reflects the flavors of jazz from around the world. You want Latin jazz, Afro-Cuban jazz, jazz funk, jazz fusion, soul jazz, any jazz – we’ve got it. We celebrate jazz talent from old to new and local to legendary. It’s what makes our station unique.

“We are proud of this international recognition,” said Carlos Lando, KUVO’s General Manager. “We’ve always been proud of our long tradition of sharing jazz, blues, and news with our loyal listeners in our community.  But, it’s really fantastic that our community is growing worldwide. We have fans from Japan, Spain, China, and apparently the UK.”

KUVO/KVJZ is an independent, public radio station dedicated to providing distinctive music, news, and information programming which reflects the values and cultural diversity of its listener community. KUVO/KVJZ has served the community since 1985 with jazz, blues, news and a weekend lineup of culturally rich diverse programming. The station is on 89.3FM Denver, 89.7FM Breckenridge, 88.5FM Vail and online at kuvo.org.
