Colorado Music-Related Business|

From Carla Jordan on Facebook, 8/16/17: Ten years ago I bought Ziggies out of bankruptcy and saved it from imminent closure. I secured a 10 year lease on the property with a first right of refusal for building purchase. Over the past 10 years I’ve been trying to get them to sell me the building. They would not for various family / heir reasons / personal reasons.

The actual owner passed away a few years ago and it has been in a trust. I have been informed by the trustee that they are going to be putting the building up for sale within the next couple weeks. My lease, which goes through October 31st, will be honored of course. And I do have that first right of refusal. Meaning, once they have a legitimate offer they have to present said offer to me, and I may purchase it for said price. However, they are asking $1,000,000.00 (yes $1 Million) for the building, which I cannot justify coughing up, even if I had it!

I am looking closely at my options, which include potentially moving Ziggies to a new location (which may be cost prohibitive), selling the entire Ziggies business (assets, licenses, etc) to someone else, and / or offering to sell the business with the real estate building sale. The sale of Ziggies with the sale of the building is unlikely as they believe any buyers of the property will scrap the building and build more lofts or some sort of new development.

We are staying open until at least October 31st, perhaps longer if they do not have a buyer in place, and we would then go to a month to month lease. All of the scheduled shows through October 31st are also still on the books with no changes planned.

Owning a bar, especially one with live music every night, tends to be very expensive and a lot of hard exhausting work. I’ve given Ziggies everything I have, financially, emotionally, and physically for the past 10 years – I cannot justify sinking an additional million dollars into a business that perhaps has run it’s course.

There are certainly a lot of questions people are asking, wondering, curious about, etcetera. I’m trying to sort things out and plan for an uncertain future. The thought of a bulldozer rolling over the space Ziggies is (since 1964) and Lou’s was (1952-1964) makes me literally sick to my stomach. Obviously this is heart breaking for me and a tough thing to swallow.

They will be putting a big FOR SALE sign up on the building, probably next week. It will include the entire building, including Rico’s Upholstery space, the space in the middle, and the Ziggies space. Yates to the alley. The growth and development of Denver has been booming and I saw this coming, however, you cannot make someone sell you a building if they choose not to.

If you, or someone you know, is interested in purchasing the building and keeping Ziggies alive, let me know. The building is being listed for $1M, the Ziggies business would be sold separately from that $1M. I own the Ziggies liquor and business licenses and those cannot be sold with the building without my permission.

Thank you to our loyal employees, patrons, musicians, fans, dancers, poets, lovers and supporters of live music. The amount of history and magical music made in Ziggies cannot be measured. We couldn’t have stayed open as long as we did without your support. We will see what happens once they slap that FOR SALE sign on the building in the coming weeks. Kindest regards, Carla and the Ziggies crew.
