Balanced Breakfast Denver meets every month, meetings are open to anybody that is passionate about the Music Industry. This Month our speaker is Shannon Webber. As one of the Co-Directors at Girls Rock Denver, Shannon is a founding member of this radical summer rock camp for girls.* For 12 years, Girls Rock Denver has put instruments in the hands of girls and gender-expansive youth ages 8-17, giving them a platform to realize the power they already possess in their hands, hearts, vocal chords, and minds.
Part of a global movement, Girls Rock Denver believes
Girls* should be seen and heard.
Potential is not dictated by gender.
In providing girls* with a nonjudgmental space where they can be themselves.
In a girl’s right to confidence, self-reliance, and courage.
Girls* should be encouraged to express themselves with creativity and enthusiasm.
In the power of women and girls* learning from each other.
that “rock” is a verb rather than a genre.
As the front woman for the Denver doompop band church fire, Shannon delivers rivetingly intense and cathartic performances. They’ve had the privilege of performing as a local headliners for the Westword Music Showcase and in Europe. Driven by her work in survivor services and social justice, Shannon believes that our anger is powerful, and our power is beautiful. She’s also involved in organizing feminist music festival, Titwrench Fest, and is the Director of Financial Aid at Red Rocks Community College when the sun is out.
*Girl is a complicated term and can mean many things. “Girl” doesn’t automatically include all aspects of the gender spectrum that is welcome within our organization. We acknowledge that we do not live in a post-gender world, and maintain the value in creating safe spaces of expression and growth for all girls, trans, and gender-expansive individuals. – Girls Rock Denver
The conversation could go many directions in a casual Q & A type atmosphere, this is one not to miss!
