PAUL VASTOLA IS THE FEATURED COMBO BUSINESS MEMBER OF THE WEEK!

Paul Vastola, owner of Rocky Mountain Records at 1250 West Cedar Avenue, Denver, CO 802xx, offers piano lessons and was in a mixed choir in his youth. Paul gave those up for rock guitar after the Beatles came on the scene. Paul owned a very early Moog synthesizer and brought the first one to the Denver recording scene in 1972.  Paul quickly became established as an electronic music specialist in the Colorado recording industry. He eventually became a  recording engineer, producer, composer, and then opened Rocky Mountain Recorders in 1989 which continues to be a premier Denver recording facility. Paul continues to play piano regularly and some guitar on recordings to keep his chops up! He also owns two Yamaha C-7 grand pianos – absolutely beautiful looking and sounding instruments. Currently he keeps busy recording music in his studio, and remotely mixes, masters and provides all types of audio services. Paul has also been known to write songs on commission, especially for radio and television commercials.

GUMBO LE FUNQUE RELEASES ITS DEBUT RECORDING, “FUNKY-DANGEROUS PARTY MUSIC,” AUGUST 24th

Denver, CO – After having wowed more than 11,000 fans during this summer’s City Park Jazz, COMBO member Gumbo le Funque is now releasing their anticipated debut studio CD on Sunday, August 24 at Jazz at Jack’s in downtown Denver, entitled “Funky-Dangerous Party Music.” Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m.

Gumbo le Funque’s high-energy, muscular sound, evoking such greats as Trombone Shorty and Galactic, is captured on this debut recording.  Local studio royalty have contributed to this freshman effort, recorded at Mighty Fine Studios in Denver. The primary engineer was Mario Casilio (Leftover Salmon, Bill Frisell, the Mercury Project), with assistance from Colin Bricker (DeVotchka, Fred Hess).

“From the super horn-heavy openers “Funquey Gumbo” to the sultry soprano sax on “Riff With It” to the melodic, vocally driven “Make It Grow,” says Denver’s Marquee Magazine, “Gumbo lays down a party soundtrack that is well played, intoxicating in spirit, and sounds like something that could be spilling out the doors of Tipitina’s on a muggy summer night.”

Songs from both EPs are currently being played on 89.3 FM KUVO and 88.5 FM KGNU.  Volume 1 is currently available via iTunes and Spotify, for international audiences on Deezer, and soon on Amazon mp3.

The recording will be released in two EPs. Volume 1 is currently available at Bandcamp (linked below), and Volume 2 will be released later in 2014. Attendees of the August 24 CD release party will receive a limited edition pressing of the combined Volumes 1 and 2, the only time that this format will be made available to the public. Tickets for the event are $15 and are available at the door or in advance at www.gumbolefunque.com/tickets.

Bandleader and local Denver music veteran, Jason Justice, is the composer of the selections found on “Funky-Dangerous Party Music,” both Volumes 1 and 2. “New Orleans is the birthplace of so much American music, and this recording is our homage to that great city. We’re determined to create a new category of roots music that we’re proud to offer to Denver.”

Other contributors include bassist Mario Pagliarulo (Serj Tankian of System of a Down and SoundRabbit) and guitarist Chris Anton (SoundRabbit).  Also contributing to the project is former Denver school board member Andrea Merida, now serving as the band’s manager and background vocalist.
