Former Denver resident Nate Dawson – making a living in Music!

A friend is arguing that AC/DC is metal because of the vocal style and distorted guitars. I have always considered them hard rock. Maybe a fine line of distinction in some cases, but nonetheless, it got me to thinking (usually dangerous).
How do *you* define metal?

Blade Hudson: Classic Metal has a certain sound, a certain guitar style, the guitarists are usually more technical than a blues rock type guitarist

Trent Johnson: “more technical” don’t know if that’s an appropriate claim.

Blade to Trent: do you play guitar ? By more technical I’m talking about the approach to leads… for example, You Shook Me All Night Long vs Scorpions Sails of Charon. The style difference between Uli and Angus is obvious.

Trent: Yes I play. Owning studios in Los Angeles area, Nashville, Seattle area I also have exposure to some of the best and think most guitarists will tell you blues guitar technique is deceptively difficult to master

Nate: BB King once was asked, “can’t just anyone play the blues?” He answered, “Sure, but do you want to listen to just anyone play the blues?”

Alex Smith: so, does that mean it possibility has a little something more to do with just the notes being played?

Nate: Can you rephrase that? Are you asking is it about the notes? Or is there something to it above and beyond the notes?

Alex: I was aiming at more of your third question.

Nate: Well sure. Any successful artist in any medium has to be able to imbue their art with something besides sheer technical prowess to really create anything of lasting value. Now that said, what different people consider to be artistically special varies from one individual to the next.

Not really certain how this pertains to the subject of what constitutes “metal” though. Unless you’re suggesting that the music is what the artist says it is. In which case, Simon Wright has answered the question.

Pamela Ashton-Lauzon: Great post Nate! I honestly think that classifying metal/hard rock is kinda like being politically correct….the location of the defining line has moved over time. Socially -what used to be considered acceptable is often now frowned upon….and what used to be considered “metal” has now slid into “hard rock”….time has a way of shifting the lines. Evolution???
