Another day, another announcement about a rock star going country! Rolling Stone is reporting that ‘90s heartthrobs Matthew and Gunnar Nelson are working on a “country-flavored Christmas album.”

The news isn’t that big of a surprise, given their warm relationship with Nashville and following a well-received acoustic performance last year at CMA Fest. The brothers decided to put down roots in Music City in the mid-‘90s after a local songwriter encouraged them to visit the town. They even started working on a country album back then, but never completed it.

The two were inspired by the stripped-down style of country music and continued living, writing and honing their new sound in Nashville. Along the way, they developed a stage show that’s a tribute to their late father, actor and singer Ricky Nelson – who they say has inspired them to follow their arrows and ignore the naysayers.

“I’m at a place now — like my dad sang, ‘You can’t please everyone, so you have to please yourself’ — where I don’t care what other people think,” Matthew Nelson told Rolling Stone. “I’m going to do what I love to do and if people dig it, it’s great.”

As we’ve been reporting recently, Matthew and Gunnar Nelson join a long list of rockers and even rappers finding a place in country music. Steven Tyler, Nelly, and Bret Michaels have all released or announced plans for country records. And last week, Marilyn Manson said he’s been flirting with collaborating on a “Southern-sounding” musical project with Korn’s Jonathan Davis.
