Congratulations|

Pinar Toprak will become the first woman to score a major superhero blockbuster with the upcoming “Captain Marvel,” the composer announced on Thursday. Toprak previously contributed music to Syfy’s “Krypton” and DC’s “Justice League”

“It’s an incredible honor to be a part of the Marvel Universe,” Toprak wrote on Instagram. “So many thoughts racing through my head. And the main one is gratitude.”

Toprak’s experience as a composer for the screen includes providing the score for Syfy’s Superman prequel series “Krypton” and an additional music credit on DC’s “Justice League.” Her other credits include the USA drama “Falling Water” and the upcoming Netflix spy thriller “The Angel.”

Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as a pre-eyepatch Nick Fury, and “Guardians of the Galaxy” stars Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace will also be a part of the film — as will Clark Gregg, who played Agent Phil Coulson in the “Avengers” movies and ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.”

The rest of the cast includes Annette Bening, Ben Mendelsohn, Gemma Chan, Lashana Lynch, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace and Jude Law.

“Mississippi Grind” directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are directing the film from a script they co-wrote with some of the top women writers in Hollywood: “Inside Out” writer Meg LeFauve, “Guardians of the Galaxy” co-writer Nicole Perlman, “Tomb Raider” writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet, and “GLOW” creators Liz Flahive & Carly Mensch.

“Captain Marvel” hits theaters March 8, 2019.

Shirley Walker scored Batman: Mask of the Phantasm way back in 1993. Does she not count?

Oh….”major superhero blockbuster” . That’s changes everything.

It is truly wonderful that Pinar Toprak is scoring this film. She is a fine composer and this is long overdue. Hopefully this is the first of many more to come for her and others who have been under-represented.

Captain Marvel is receiving more than 20 million dollars in California Tax Credits so I hope that Marvel grows its commitment to diversity by also scoring the film in California.

California’s studio musicians probably represent the most inclusive of great recording orchestras anywhere without regard to gender identity, race, and national origin.
