New Television Show Now Playing Highlights Local Bands

Now Playing, a live music series launched last May and presented by Denver microbrewery Black Shirt Brewing Company and Denver Film Company, has inked a deal with Colorado Public Television. The series is also moving to a new and larger venue to accommodate its growing audience.

The May 9th installment of Now Playing will be the first at The Sidewinder Tavern, located at 4485 Logan Street in the Globeville section of Denver. It will feature Denver’s Mike Marchant in the opening slot (at 10 PM) followed by headlining “desert rock” act The Strange from New Mexico.

“Our previous shows were held at Black Shirt Brewing,” says Gabe Dohrn, Denver Film Company’s founder, “and they were very successful. But now we’ve outgrown the brewery space. The Sidewinder gets us room for a bigger audience along with the stage and lighting we need for a high quality production like ours.”

The producers of the show are expecting an additional boost to Now Playing’s audience thanks to a newly signed agreement with Colorado Public Television.

Ten-minute clips from previous Now Playing tapings are now showing on CPTV’s Sounds on 29th music program, which airs from 9-10 p.m. each Saturday night. Later this year, CPTV will begin airing 30-minute Now Playing segments each Saturday night, as part of the station’s acclaimed weekend music programming.

“We’re excited about our partnership with Now Playing,” says Brad Haug, CPTV’s Director of Programming. “It’s a project with the right idea and the right players, and it’s happening at the right time.”

Tickets are $15 at the door if the event is not sold out. The night’s beer list will feature Black Shirt’s beers.

“Music drives so much of what we do here at BSB,” says Black Shirt head brewer and co-founder Branden Miller.
