The City and County of Denver’s Arts & Venues Department is looking for an experienced Chief Operating Officer. Denver is home to some of the country’s best venues for concerts, theater, events and film. The City of Denver owns and operates many of them, including the iconic Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, and the country’s largest performing arts center under one roof, the Denver Performing Arts Complex. The city also owns the historic Denver Coliseum, the refurbished McNichols Civic Center Building and the state-of-the art Colorado Convention Center. This position directs the main operating areas of the agency to ensure that all related strategic initiatives are successfully integrated into the agency’s operations.

This includes, but is not limited to: maximizing revenue from a variety of sources; maintaining a portfolio of safe and attractive venues; controlling operating expenses; overseeing capital improvements; collaborating with promoters and presenters; integrating non-profit and private event uses.  In summary, Arts and Venues is a unique public agency that operates a diverse portfolio of venues in an entrepreneurial environment.

Job Responsibilities
Helps to establish the long term vision and strategic plan for the organization, in conjunction with the appointing authorities, other executives and agency directors, while integrating the perspectives of policy makers and elected officials into the plans.

Creates overall organizational design for operations and optimizes resource allocations, based on the long term vision of the organization and available financial resources.

Provides leadership and direction to directors, managers, and staff members to ensure the continued development and management of an efficient operation.  Establishes effective decision making processes that achieve goals and objectives, as set out in an annual operating budget and plan.

Ensures that agency’s financial and marketing objectives are integrated into venue operations, so that the agency’s annual strategic goals can be achieved.  Monitors the monthly P&L to ensure sound financial controls are in place.  Sets financial priorities to ensure the organization is operating in a manner that supports the City’s financial and agency’s goals.

Ensures that all venue operational areas support the broader strategic goals of the agency, including its Imagine 2020 and The Next Stage strategic initiatives.

Resolves complex issues with multiple internal and external stakeholders which add value to the overall management of the organization.

Represents the department in meetings with elected and/or appointed officials and other city entities. Serves as the city representative with a variety of public, business, and community organizations and fosters collaborative relationships for the benefit of the organization.

Creates and promotes a positive, inclusive work environment that supports consistency throughout the organizations.

Helps develop annual capital plan for all agency venues, such that they provide maximum patron safety and comfort and are also esthetically congruent with immediate surroundings.

Selects, trains, develops, and evaluates subordinate staff.  Makes decisions on hiring, terminations, promotions, and disciplinary actions as required.
Desired Skills and Experience

Preferred Qualifications:
Five years of experience at the type and level of Vice President or higher, working in organizations with a portfolio of diverse venues and operations that give different customer or business partners.
Minimum of 10 years of increasing responsibility managing complex venue operations at the C-level.
Demonstrated experience using contractors and unions to achieve business objectives.
Deep track record of managing in diverse work environment with competing goals–both qualitative and quantitative.
Experience with spontaneous and subscription sales of third party branded products/services.
Must be skilled in and comfortable working in distance management operational environments.
Proven experience in directing customer or patron service operations, ideally in venues ranging in size from small to large.
Demonstrated background in leading organization whose services and products are subject to public scrutiny.
Master’s degree in related field highly desirable.
Familiarity and comfort working with arts and cultural organizations.
History of managing successfully both clients and constituents that have diverging interests.
Proven ability to introduce new business initiatives into stable operating environment.
Significant experience in collaborating in the development and introduction of strategic plans into static environment.
Background needed in managing complex RFP/RFQ procurement and contracting processes.
Must have diverse experience competing for consumers’ entertainment dollars.

Education Requirement: Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field such as, Business, Marketing , Finance, or Operations Management.

Experience Requirement: Five years of experience at the type and level of Director.

Education/Experience Equivalency: Two years of the appropriate type and level of experience will serve as an equivalency to one year of education.  In lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree, eight years of relevant experience can be substituted.

A Master’s Degree may be substituted for one year of experience.

Come hear Rich Owen at 10 a.m., Brian Parton at 11 a.m., Wild Mountain Honey (Rachel and Kelley) at 12 noon, John Runnels at 1 p.m. and Jon Romero Trio at 2 p.m. Stacy Lees will be helping me to keep all things running smoothly. Please come out and give a big huge thanks to ALL of the Volunteers that help make Health Happen! Music is such a big part of staying healthy! Come out and get some ‘music therapy’. See ya there!

10:00 a.m. – Rich Owen  is an award-winning singer/songwriter from Monument, CO. A member of the Colorado County Music Association Hall of Fame, Rich has two solo albums to his credit, and is currently lead singer for the LDK Band. He has also had two of the top songs in the Colorado Music Business Organization’s songwriting contest for two years in a row!

11:00 a.m.  – Brian Parton, based in Denver, plays solo – vocal/guitar . Briskly-paced and engaging, his show features a bluesy approach to originals and choice covers of mostly pop/rock/indie/americana. He plays about 150 dates per year.  “My dad, Gene, was my biggest musical influence.” He played and sang at home only, and his Southern upbringing really came through in his sound.

12:00 p.m. – Wild Mountain Honey is an acoustic classic rock cover band featuring Kelley Nelson on guitar and vocals and Rachel Jane Johnson on vocals. Both are seasoned musicians whose amazing harmonies along with great guitar work are sure to please and will leaving you wanting more.

1:00 p.m. – John Runnels (aka Morning Bear) is an Indie Folk project fronted by Denver singer/songwriter John Runnels. With trembling lows and exalted highs, the dynamics of the music take the listener on an emotional journey. Featuring soaring vocals and atypical arrangements including cello and violin, the songs provide a textured landscape behind pop-influenced hooks. John was also an American Idol runner up.

2:00 p.m. – The Jon Romero Trio is a down-sized version of the eight piece band, Jon Romero y Amanecer, a live performance Latin Jazz Ensemble, and a Jonnie Sage Records Recording Artist since 1997 in Denver, Colorado.

Calling all Volunteers!
Each year, 19,000 9Health Fair volunteers serve more than 75,000 people from communities around the state. Because many of these volunteers are medically-trained individuals, 9Health Fair needs Phlebotomists, Registered Nurses (RNs), Physicians Assistants (PAs), Medical Doctors (MDs), Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and other credentialed medical professionals to help administer a variety of health screenings and draw blood. Retired medical professionals and students enrolled in a medical program can also volunteer at any9Health Fair site, with instructor supervision, and additional phlebotomy training and refresher courses are available through 9Health Fair. Non-medical volunteers are needed to provide registration and cashier services, while Spanish speaking volunteers are also necessary for on-site interpretation and translation.
