Youth on Record microphone

FEMpowered is a social justice oriented group for creative young women including queer, trans and non-binary, ages 14-20. This summer we are launching a 6 week camp that will offer young women an opportunity to cultivate their creative expression, build community and develop their understanding of themselves and the world.

Throughout this camp, music will be used to represent and understand the various participant identities represented in the camp and how their identities, in relation to race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality and culture, have both been affected and affect the politics, society and economy of the United States. We will use music to demonstrate the historical and present power and resistance of marginalized groups of identity.

Each participant will work towards a creative project that will aim to influence lasting change within their communities beyond and after the camp ends.

FEMpowered is a Youth on Record (YOR) program. YOR’s community programs are designed to help young people become more free, more rooted in their personal power, and better able to thrive in spite of systems and circumstances that dis-empower and marginalize them. YOR designs and implements strengths-based, music-centered programs intended to equip young people from historically under-resources communities with skills needed to find success in life by advancing their academic success, increasing their economic opportunities and career skills, and strengthening their community connections and networks.
